Simple Ideas to Reduce Electricity Usage
21st February 2010
As energy costs increase by the day, and that are directly related to the ever depleting resources of our planet, it is not only beneficial for our pockets but for the environment as well. Of course, not all of us can afford solar panels that can alleviate us from depending on electricity, so the only option is to explore ways by which we can reduce electricity usage at home.
Here are some simple steps to reduce the use of electricity:
1. Look around for devices that silently consume power (like phone chargers, mp3 players etc. ), and disconnect them.
2. Since your refrigerator comprises 20% of your overall energy consumption, it would be a good idea to use to turn it down to 37 degrees with the freezer at 3 degrees. Also ensure that all door are sealed tightly.
3. Use the washing machine only if you have a basketful of clothes, while selecting the warm or cold water setting.
4. Use the dishwasher only if full, and air dry your dishes without using the heating option.
5. Set the air conditioner to the least temperature which is just enough to keep you cool while remembering to use the geyser for a minimum amount of time.
6. Switch off lights and your computer monitor when you don’t need them, and better still, use compact fluorescent bulbs that conserve energy.
7. Further still, when you replace your old appliances make sure that you select new models that are energy efficient.
8. Finally, monitor your usage every month, and make the necessary adjustments.
